Watershed Conservation Planning

WAY's Partners have completed "River Conservation Plans" for all fo York Counties watersheds. Rivers conservation planning is a comprehensive evaluation of a watershed's existing, known land use, natural resource inventories, and damage/loss/pollution, threats and opportunities for restoration, protection and recreational enhancement of our watersheds. Public participation identifying natural resources, threats, and opportunities for conservation is key to success. The outcome of this process is a valuable planning document local elected officials, cooperating agencies, nonprofit organizations, and landowners may use to conserve and preserve their natural resources and quality of life for future generation. Watershed conservation plans:

  • Yellow Breeches Creek (Cumberland & York Counties)
  • Conewago Creek (Adams & York Counties)
  • Codorus Creek
  • Muddy Creek
  • Kreutz Creek (including Lower Susquehanna River, Deer Creek & Gunpowder Falls tributaries)

Watershed Restoration

WAY's Partners have developed programs to achieve restoration and protection goals based on stream quality, land use, and input from cooperating agencies, organizations, individuals and governing agencies.

Watershed restoration projects:

  • Yellow Breeches Creek
  • Codorus Creek East, South & West Branches
  • Muddy Creek North Branch
  • Deer Creek (MD & PA)

Weekend Watershed

Weekend is our annual public education, restoration and protection opportunity for our partners to sponsor a venue that will attract the public and get them involved supporting their cause. Partners provide venue planning and operation, and WAY provides education and outreach, facilitation, and technical assistance. Watershed Weekend is held the last full weekend of September, annually. If you're organization is interested in sponsoring a venue, please let us know.

Sustainable York County "Next Steps"

In 2005, WAY hosted its successful "Pigs, Parks and SuperStores": a conference about the Sustainability of York County, at Heritage Hills. The purpose of this conference was to bring together public and private agencies, organizations and key community individuals to help define "a sustainable York" and identify the "next steps" for our partners to develop and implement for getting there. Over 100 stakeholders attended.
